Tournament Of Roses® Foundation Awards $200,000 To 45 Local Non-Profit Organizations


Pasadena, CA. (May 31, 2017) – The Tournament of Roses Foundation is proud to announce the 2017 grant awards totaling $200,000 presented to 45 civic, educational and cultural organizations in the San Gabriel Valley. Thirteen of the 45 organizations funded are first-time grant recipients. These organizations are: Alhambra High School Mighty Moors Boosters, Altadena Library Foundation, Blair High School PTA, Flintridge Center, Friends of the Temple City Library, Pasadena Community Gardens Conservancy, Pasadena Heritage, Pasadena High School Alumni Association, Pittance Chamber Music Inc, Rose Bowl Riders Charitable Organization, San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre, Southern California Children’s Museum and Theatre Americana.

Since its inception in 1983, the Tournament of Roses Foundation has funded over $3 million in charitable contributions on behalf of the Tournament of Roses Association. The Foundation assists charities in the greater Pasadena area by funding sports and recreation, visual and performing arts, and volunteer motivation and leadership development. These grants will help support new and ongoing programs benefiting children, teens, adults, and seniors.

About Productions – ‘Through the Ages’ residency for 30 new Marshall Fundamental High School students.

*Alhambra High School Mighty Moors Boosters – Purchase 100 jackets for the Alhambra High School Marching Band.

*Altadena Library Foundation – Free monthly community concert series, The Second Saturdays.

American Composers Forum of Los Angeles – Making Music in Schools, a structured series of classes that places ACF-LA instructors in local schools to teach the fundamentals of music.

*Blair High School PTA – Purchase of 5 saxophones for the Blair High School Band, Pep Band and four levels of Concert Band.

Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills – The Keystone Club and Torch Club programs focusing on developing good character and leadership skills in adolescent youth ages 11 to 18.

Caltech Y – The Caltech Y Rise Program provides tutoring and academic mentoring for 85 junior high and high school students at Caltech’s campus.

Day One – Monthly Youth Network program to advance leadership skills and increase collaboration.

*Flintridge Center – The Youth of Promise program provides a safe space for underserved youth to increase character, leadership, team-building, and volunteer skills.

Foothill Creative Arts Group – Curriculum-based art program in ceramics for 1st through 5th graders at Sierra Madre Elementary School.

Friends In Deed – Organizational development for board and staff training class on the advanced use of Raiser’s Edge, a development database program.

Friends of the Levitt Pavilion Pasadena “Little Hands, Big World” interactive workshops before each of the Children’s Concerts, in partnership with Armory Center for the Arts, to provide a broadened experience of music, dance, and art.

*Friends of the Temple City Library – A Year of Girl Empowerment, a monthly series of programs, workshops, and panels with a focus on grades 5-12.

Girls on the Run of Los Angeles County – Assistance for families in need through GOTRLA’s after-school youth-development program for young girls.

Harambee Ministries – Music and arts summer program for 45 youth, 1st-6th grade, who live in Northwest Pasadena.

Ideal Youth Incorporated – Summer youth workforce development training program that inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy.

Jackson PTA – Expansion of the music and arts programs by purchasing equipment, and materials for free after-school classes. Transform an outdoor space to utilize as an art classroom for Jackson STEM.

Life Skills FORE Pasadena Youth, Inc. dba The First Tee of Pasadena – Golf caps to participants of educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

Light Bringer Project – Room 13 creative studios at John Muir High School, Eliot Middle School, San Rafael and Field Elementary Schools.

Los Angeles Children’s Chorus (LACC) – Vital, need-based scholarships to help low income and hardship families cover the cost of their child’s participation.

Mark Keppel High School Drama Boosters – Purchase equipment, costumes, makeup supplies, orchestra flooring, curtains, and more, to prepare our theatre students for college and a viable career, as well as continue to create high-quality productions in theatre.

Marshall Music Boosters Inc – Hire color guard and percussion instructors who are not employees of the Pasadena Unified School District. The funds will also be used to purchase a drum set and storage for Marshall Fundamental School.

Mothers’ Club Family Learning Center – Mothers’ Club Volunteer Program, providing free, high-quality education and social services to Pasadena parents and children in need.

MUSE/IQUE – KIDS/IQUE, a multi-faceted music immersion program.

Neighborhood Urban Family Center – Can-Do Kids Club Music Lessons, instrumental music lessons offered to all 3rd – 5th graders enrolled in the Can-Do Kids Club after school program.

Oakwood Brass – Outreach Project – Comprehensive programs designed to promote and support instrumental studies through concerts, hands-on learning with instruments, and mentoring for young musicians.

OBA, Inc. – Train leaders through DOLI, the Diverse Outdoor Leadership Institute, to develop wilderness leaders of color that will expose urban youth to our national parks, forests and other wilderness areas.

Pasadena Arts Council – Scholarship Audition Performance Preparatory Academy’s (SAPPA) group music education classes for children, ages 7-12, and for adults and seniors.

*Pasadena Community Gardens Conservancy – Half acre garden, operated by student volunteer leaders in the Green Club at Pasadena High School that promotes volunteerism, contributes to STEM through botanical study, enables greater physical exercise, and helps improve student nutrition through greater consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Pasadena Educational Foundation – Re-establish baseball and softball teams for boys and girls in grades 9 through 12 at Blair High School in the Pasadena Unified School District.

*Pasadena Heritage Train volunteers as Lead Docents within the non-profit historic preservation organization.

*Pasadena High School Alumni Association – Enhancement of the athletic programs with the purchase of new equipment and uniforms serving the students at Pasadena High School.

Pasadena Museum of History – A series of lectures as enrichment for the museum’s adult volunteers and to bring in interested members of the community as new volunteers.

Pasadena Panthers Inc. – Reconditioning and purchasing new helmets for football players who learn the importance of education, the values of athletics, teamwork, competition, discipline and good sportsmanship.

Pasadena Senior Center – Concerts in the Park, an eight-week summer musical series, with programming that is geared towards the musical tastes of older adults.

Pasadena Summer Youth Chamber Orchestra – “The Young Artist’s Concert” project, an annual public event in the City of Pasadena performed by middle school, high school, and college students.

*Pittance Chamber Music Inc. – Production of a free public chamber music concert in Pasadena at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music.

*Rose Bowl Riders Charitable Organization – Art of the Horse, which brings 4th & 5th-grade students from PUSD to the barn to meet the horses, learn about their history and jobs around the world, watch a riding demonstration, and create culturally appropriate art using the horse as the focus.

*San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre – Workshops for underprivileged youth providing exposure to tools to improve their skills and positioning them for a successful career in music theatre.

Sierra Madre Playhouse – New sound system to support stage storytelling from the community sharing their stories and perspectives.

South Pasadena Educational Foundation – Purchase of two carts for the South Pasadena High School marching band – one to move the Gong, and the other to move the Chimes to and from performance venues and during performances.

*Southern California Children’s Museum – Art Room in Southern California Children’s Museum, dedicated to helping children explore and create visual arts.

The John Muir High School Alumni Association – Eight new uniforms for John Muir’s 16-member band.

*Theatre Americana – Purchase of a multi-media system to improve the theatre experience for senior members.

YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley – Six-week Girls Empowerment Summer Camp for underserved girls ages 10 to 15.
